FWQs- Frequently Wondered Questions

Q-Do I have to be diagnosed with something to receive Mental Health Services?

A-If you want to use health insurance, counseling has to be determined medically necessary by a licensed professional. A diagnosis from the ICD 10 indicates medical necessity. However, discrimination for mental health conditions is far less than 50 years ago. Mental health diagnoses do not have to be permanent, and good treatment is designed to resolve issues.

Q-How long does it take before feeling better?

A-I hate to say it depends, but it depends on what the problem is, how supportive your environment is, and how much energy you can invest into the process. Sustainable progress is slow and steady so what is most important is that you start doing what you can keep doing. Then you will pick up momentum towards your goals.

Q-Is it true that I might feel worse before I feel better?

A-It is often true because humans are avoiders of pain, and we find ways to escape reality if it is too painful. What feels worse is facing reality to change its impact on you. Good therapy and make the tolerable so let the therapist know if this is a concern.

Q-What if I am the only one wanting to get help in my family?

A- This is common and still beneficial. All types of change have a ripple effect on the environment around you. Imagine if everyone is waiting for the person next to them to change, we would be much worse off.

Q-What if I can’t afford it?

A-Reach out to someone anyway, at least for a consultation. There are several routes to get services, and some help can get you to a place where you can afford more services.

Q-How do I find the right service or provider for me and my situation?

A-There are several ways, choose the one that you like the most. I do not recommend taking the same route as someone you know because individual differences will significantly influence the outcomes. Here are some options: 1. You can consult with a professional or two to get information about what options they would use for your situation. 2. You can research your main problem and find recommended approaches to resolving it. 3. You can research modern therapy solutions and choose one that makes sense to you. It is reasonable to try a couple options before finding the right fit.
